Tinnitus…

“A constant ringing, buzzing or whistling sound… especially when everything else is quiet — can feel overwhelming.”

But it’s not the sound itself that causes distress — it’s the way the mind responds to it.

“Tinnitus doesn’t have to control your focus — it’s possible to change the way your mind responds to it.”

Understanding Tinnitus

Almost everyone experiences the occasional ringing in their ears after exposure to loud noise — whether at work or socially. Sometimes, the trigger may not be clear. Around 10% of the population will experience tinnitus frequently, with approximately 5% experiencing persistent or troublesome symptoms.

Tinnitus is not a disease or illness — it is a symptom.

It can be brought on by:

  • Mental or emotional changes
  • Physical changes
  • Emotional shock
  • Loss of hearing

…and is not always directly related to hearing itself.

Living with Tinnitus

Many people with tinnitus find that the sound becomes more noticeable in quiet environments.

For this reason, they often use background noise such as:

  • Television
  • Radio
  • Music

This helps to distract from the ringing, buzzing or whistling sounds. The quieter the environment… the louder tinnitus can seem.

This can sometimes lead to:

  • Frustration
  • Difficulty relaxing
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Increased awareness of the sound

The Mind & Tinnitus

Tinnitus is not just about the ears — it is also about how the brain processes sound. The more attention we give to the sound, the more noticeable it can become.

Over time, the mind can begin to:

  • Focus on it more
  • React emotionally to it
  • Become more aware of it

This can create a cycle where the sound feels louder or more intrusive.

Who Can This Help?

Hypnotherapy may be helpful if:

  • Your tinnitus feels worse in quiet environments
  • You find yourself focusing on the sound constantly
  • It affects your relaxation or sleep
  • You feel frustrated or anxious because of it
  • You want to feel more in control of your response

How Hypnotherapy Can Help

Hypnotherapy is an effective way to help manage tinnitus, particularly for those who have tried other approaches without success.

Hypnosis is a natural, heightened state of awareness where the subconscious mind becomes more open to positive change.

During hypnotherapy, we can:

  • Explore when the tinnitus first began
  • Identify any emotional triggers or contributing factors
  • Help release or reduce associated emotional responses
  • Retrain the mind to process the sound differently

Many clients learn how to “Tune out” the sound… reduce their awareness of it… shift their focus more easily… feel calmer and more in control. Hypnotherapy can also provide tools to help manage symptoms in a positive and relaxed way moving forward.

“This is not about forcing the sound away — but changing your relationship with it.”

A Reassuring Thought

Many people believe tinnitus will never go away. This is not always the case. With time — and the right approach — tinnitus can often lessen, become more manageable, or fade into the background of awareness.

A Simple Calming Exercise

If you are experiencing tinnitus right now, take a moment to try this simple exercise:

Sit comfortably and gently close your eyes if you feel able.

Take a slow, steady breath in through your nose…

And slowly breathe out through your mouth.

Allow your shoulders to soften…

And your body to begin to relax.

Now, instead of trying to block out the sound…

Simply allow it to be there.

Without judgement… without resistance.

Begin to notice other sounds around you:

  • The subtle sounds in the room
  • Distant background noises
  • The sound of your own breathing

Gently allow your awareness to expand.

The tinnitus sound does not need to disappear…

It can simply become one sound amongst many.

As your focus softens and widens,

you may begin to notice that the sound feels less intense…

less central…

less important.

Take another slow breath in…

And as you breathe out, allow yourself to feel just a little more at ease.

The more you practice shifting your focus in this way, the easier it can become for your mind to turn the volume down on tinnitus naturally. This is just a small example of how the mind can begin to respond differently — deeper change can be achieved through guided hypnotherapy.
